Paul Fisher
Paul is a private art dealer and owner of the Paul Fisher Gallery in West Palm Beach, Florida since 1990. He represents the works of internationally renowned artist Dale Chihuly and others. Passionate about the environment, Paul often showcases nature-themed work by notable artists including the legendary Jean-Louis Dubois, French wildlife photographer praised by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis as "a talent and vision that comes along once in a lifetime." This year’s exhibitions at his gallery have been among the most celebrated in the Palm Beaches and included shows by Bruce Helander, America's most prominent collage artist; Kimberly Du Ross, daughter of Kate Ford, the automobile heiress; and painter and sculptor Edwina Sandys.
Judith M. Garcia
General Manager, The Education Network (T.E.N.), the television production studios of the School District of Palm Beach County, producing distance learning courses, staff development/training, enrichment programming and community education and information. Previously, she served in a similar position with Fairfax County Public Schools’ (Virginia) Fairfax Network, doing national and international programming. In 1985, she was selected as on of the top three teacher astronauts in NASA’s Teacher in Space Project, and during a two-year tenure, she trained and spoke before President Reagan and audiences throughout the USA and many other countries. She received a B.A. from West Virginia University, M.Ed. from George Mason University, and an Ed.D. from Oklahoma State University. She also attended and presented at leadership conferences at Oxford University and studied at the Université de Savoie in France.
Paula Henderson
Paula Henderson is Community Relations Specialist in Community Relations for Florida Power & Light Company, the principal subsidiary of FPL Group, Inc., one of the country's largest electricity-related services companies. Ms. Henderson's responsibilities include overseeing FPL signature programs, community partnerships, event sponsorships and planning, community education programs, employee volunteerism, employee workplace campaigns, community outreach and educational matching gifts. Prior to joining FPL in 2004, Ms. Henderson managed community development and public relations for Family Central, Inc. a non profit agency in Palm Beach County, Florida. Paula holds a Bachelors of Arts degree in Communications from Palm Beach Atlantic University. A 24-year resident of Palm Beach County, Paula resides in Lake Worth with her family. Paula is a Board member of Child and Family Connections and also serves as an alternate Board member for the Literacy Coalition in Palm Beach County.
Carrie Hill
The Deputy Executive Director for Corporate Resources for the South Florida Water Management District, Carrie Hill was appointed to the Palm Beach County School Board by Governor Charlie Crist in late 2007, and was elected to the position the following year. A native Floridian who received her BS degree in Business and her Masters degree in Public Administration from the University of Florida, Carrie Hill’s 28-year professional career has been spent in city and county government. She has lived in Palm Beach County since 1990 and has served as the City Manager for Boynton Beach and the Village Manager for the Village of Golf. She is very active in the community, serving on the Boards of the Schoolhouse Children's Museum and the "I Have a Dream" Foundation. In addition to serving as the Board's representative to the Marshall Foundation, she also represents the Board to the Special Taxing District for the Children's Services Council.
Bobbi Horwich
Along with her husband Harry, Mrs. Horwich is a noted Palm Beach philanthropist who is active in a variety of local causes. She is a board member for the League of Women Voters and Very Special Arts, and has chaired the boards of numerous local libraries. She is also a political delegate to Florida’s legislature. Before retiring, Mrs. Horwich owned a chain of pharmacies and surgical supply stores. She is a graduate of the University of Florida and Barry University.
Jack Lansing
Vice president and senior financial advisor for Merrill Lynch Private Client Group, West Palm Beach; recipient of the 2002 Merrill Lynch Award for Community Involvement; administrator of the Marshal Foundation’s charitable giving program and endowment fund.
Dr. Brian E. Lapointe
Research Professor with the Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute at Florida Atlantic Universwity (Ft. Pierce, FL). Extensive experience studying water quality issues in South Florida and the Caribbean. Currently funded by the State of Florida to assess linkages between land-based runoff and Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) in coastal waters of South Florida. Author of over 80 peer-reviewed publications in scientific journals and contributing author to the book Clean Coastal Waters: Understanding and Reducing Nutrient Pollution (2000, National Academy of Sciences, Washington, DC). Awards and recognitions include the Sigma Xi, Outstanding Research Award and the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation Award. Named in Who’sWho in Scuba Diving and Underwater Research and Who’s Who in America, Science and Engineering, the Millennium Edition. Member of the Explorer’s Club. BS in Biology from Boston University (1973); MS in Environmental Science from the University of Florida (1979); Ph.D. in Marine Biology from the University of South Florida (1982).
Martha Musgrove
President & Founder, Decision Makers Forum, Inc., a nonprofit, educational organization that explains and promotes Everglades Restoration and attendant issues. Prior to founding the organization, Martha spent 37 years in the news business as a reporter, columnist, and editorial writer, retiring in 2001 as associate editor of The Miami Herald. Since then she has been a consulting editor and writer, and has authored occasional articles for newspapers and anthologies. Martha’s numerous awards and recognitions have included the Communications Award from the Treasure Coast Chapter of the Florida Association of Environmental Professionals in 2004, the Al Burt Award from 1000 Friends of Florida in 1998 and being named Journalist of the Year by the Sierra Club Miami Group in 1998. She is on the board of directors of the Forum Club of the Palm Beaches and the Friends of Meg Gale Environmental Academy of Forest Hill High School, and is an Elder at Lakeside Presbyterian Church and a member of Audubon Society of the Everglades and the National Parks and Conservation Association.
Janice G. Owens
An advocate for preservation of national, statewide, and local treasures, Janice has served as Director of Education for the Preservation Foundation of Palm Beach for the past 16 years. Working collaboratively throughout Florida and more closely in Palm Beach County, she has formed valuable partnerships; among them are the Florida Trust for Historic Preservation, the School District of Palm Beach County, the Historical Society of Palm Beach County, and the Marshall Foundation. She serves as a guide for visiting dignitaries, national and international; participates on numerous local and state committees; and is often the spokesperson on topics of preservation and education. Janice has long been a supporter of Everglades restoration, now serving on the Marshall Foundation's Development Committee. |
Sylvia Pelizza Sylvia Pelizza is most often referred to as the "Manager" of the Arthur R. Marshall Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge, but her official Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) title is Project Leader. A Native American with a BS in Wildlife Science from New Mexico State University, she has spent 28 years with FWS, 18 as the Project Leader at five stations, including refuges in Hawaii, California, South Dakota, and New Jersey. Experienced in wildlife and endangered species rehabilitation and management, water quality and quantity, and wildfire management, Pelizza has earned numerous Department of Interior and FWS commendations, including nine Star Awards.
Charlotte Pelton
As President, of The Waters Pelton Organization, Inc. (WPO), her professional experience has included corporate marketing and strategic planning responsibilities at two fortune 100 companies, followed by 10+ years as a consultant to non-profits across the country. Her firm provides team-based planning, fund raising and marketing communications consulting services to not-for-profit companies and business/trade associations. Ms. Pelton earned a BS degree in Business Administration (Marketing) from the University of Southern Mississippi and completed postgraduate work at Memphis State University. She is a member of the Association of Fundraising Professionals and Executive Women of the Palm Beaches, and serves on the boards of Pura Vida Missions and the West Palm Beach Library Foundation.
Julia Pimm
Mrs. Pimm of Key Largo, is a former travel agent who now serves as assistant to her husband, Stuart Pimm, a noted ecologist who studies species extinction in the Florida Everglades.
Dr. Tom Poulson
Emeritus Professor in the Ecology and Evolution Section of the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Illinois, Chicago. Dr. Poulson has received grants, awards, and honors for his teaching and research at all stages of his career. His award-winning interactive teaching style always includes questions, discussions, votes, and participatory demonstrations and games. Since moving to Florida in 2000 his goal has been to enhance scientific, ecological, and evolutionary literacy in all venues and to all ages. To this end he continues to teach for FAU’s Life-long Learning Society and help with the ARMF’s K-12 programs and FEI’s Summer Intern Program. As the Foundation’s Senior Scientist and member of FEI’s Science and Technology Committee, he brings his expertise, in biological integrity of aquatic systems to bear on problems and solutions related to the restoration of our Everglades.
Judy Schrafft
Chairman and director of the Coral Reef Society; founding member of the Loggerhead Marine Life Center; Chairwoman, Marshall Foundation Annual Recognition Luncheon; published writer and journalist; author of several travel books; past affiliations include directorships of the Animal Rescue League, the Palm Beach Zoological Society, the Science Museum and Planned Parenthood; one of the first woman members of the Explorers Club of New York City; a world-class scuba diver, has dived in and written about diverse dive locations that including Indonesia, New Guinea, and the Solomon Islands.
Joseph A. Schweigart
President, JAS Water Resource Consulting, Inc; retired civil engineer with South Florida Water Management District, serving for 38 years in various capacities with particular emphasis on water resources management and Everglades restoration; recipient of numerous national and state awards; U.S. Naval Reserve military career, retiring in 1996 with the rank of Commander, CEC, USNR; serves on board of directors of YMCA of the Palm Beaches.
Steve Seftenberg, Esq.
Attorney-at-law, West Palm Beach and Chicago; specializes in estate planning and administration, asset protection and elder law; recognized for pro-bono work with charitable organizations and the Legal Aid Society of Palm Beach County; fellow, American Trust and Estate Counsel; chairman of professional committees of the American Bar Association, the Illinois State Bar Association, the Chicago Bar Association and the Chicago State Planning Council; awarded “Builder of the Year” by Broader Urban Involvement and Leadership Development, a group fighting street gangs in the Chicago area; pro-bono corporate attorney for Marshall Foundation.
Bunnie Stevens
Bunnie is a well-known local philanthropist who can usually be found leading the charge for a variety of good causes. She’s been active with the Greater Palm Beach Area Chapter of the American Red Cross, the English-Speaking Union and the International Fund for Animal Welfare, to name a few. Bunnie has been a longtime friend of the Foundation and has served as an Honorary Ambassador to the River of Grass Gala several times.
Allen Trefry
Mr. Trefry, of Palm Beach Gardens, recently retired from a career as Environmental Director for the Resources Protection Division of the Palm Beach County Department of Environmental Resources Management. Now, he spends much of his time volunteering with numerous Palm Beach County organizations, including Special Olympics, Kravis Center, National Association of Eagle Scouts, Palm Beach County Environmental Resources Management, AARP Tax-Aide, Pine Jog Environmental Education Center, Palm Beach Marathon, SunFest, Grassy Waters Preserve Nature Center, Water Catchment Area Advisory Board, Pack and Paddle, Gator Snow Ski Club, Palm Beach Atlantic College, Palm Beach Post Pathfinders.
Joel VanArman
An environmental scientist, Joel retired from a 35-year career with the South Florida Water management District in 2007. He now runs his own consulting business and has taught at the university level. He has co-authored numerous articles that have appeared in peer-reviewed and technical publications, and he’s received a variety of professional honors, including membership in Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Society.
Dr. Peggy VanArman
Associate Professor of Biology at Palm Beach Atlantic University, where she has been since 1989. President of Friends of the Academy, Forest Hill High School Environmental Academy; board member, Palm Beach County Science and Engineering Fair. Member: Sigma Xi Research Society, Florida Academy of Scientists, Florida Association of Environmental Professionals, American Association of University Women. Dr. VanArman is a published author who has influenced countless students through the years through her dedication to science-based solutions for the Florida Everglades.
Michael Wallander Michael Wallander, J.D., LL.M., is President of The Kapok Group, an organization he founded that focuses on the development of sustainable projects and organizations. Previously, Mike was a corporate and securities attorney with one of the largest law firms in the world where he provided strategic sustainability advice to clients across sectors - entrepreneurs, governments, non-profit organizations, and public and private companies ranging from start-ups to Fortune 100 companies. Mike is a frequent speaker and teacher on elements of the developing global carbon markets. With a longstanding interest in market-based incentives for promoting environmental leadership, Mike studied the intersection of sustainability with the securities laws and received his LL.M. degree in Securities and Financial Regulation, with distinction, from Georgetown University. Prior to that, Mike obtained his J.D. from the University of Pittsburgh and his B.A. from the University of Florida. When he is not spending time with his wife, Amy, and sons, Jack and Leo, Mike is actively involved in the local Palm Beach County and broader sustainability community.
