Sam and Joyce McLendon are well-known Palm Beach philanthropists.
Among Joyce’s many volunteer commitments are serving

Foundation, being an officer for the Florida Arthritis Foundation
Chapter, and sitting on the boards if the Palm Beach United
Way and the World Affairs Council. She has been named “Executive

Sydelle Meyer
Mrs. Meyer and her husband Arthur are noted community leaders

Judith M. Garcia

Toni May
The Host and Executive Producer of the local television news
magazine program South Florida Today, Toni has worked in
the broadcast news business in South Florida for nearly 15
years. She has produced news at the NBC affiliate in West
Palm Beach and at the ABC affiliate in Los Angeles. She has
been a field producer for ABC NewsOne. She has won several
honors, including an AP award for best Public Affairs show
for "South Florida Today”, an AP award for best
newscast at WPBF/West Palm Beach and a Telly award for a
story at WXEL. She attended University of Florida where she

Larry is a Vice President, Director & Wealth Advisor with
Harris Private Bank, West Palm Beach. He serves as an advisor
to high net-worth clients, providing private banking, financial
planning, investment management, wealth transfer and estate
planning solutions. In addition to his work at the bank, Larry
is a former Certified Financial Planning instructor at Barry
University and a member of the Palms West Estate Planning Council.

Jonathan Otto
CEO, Retail DNA; Owner, Trump Plaza Office Complex. Mr. Otto
helped get the Marshall Foundation off the ground by offering
office space in Trump Plaza, which the Foundation used for
four years. He joined the Foundation’s board in 2004. “I’ve
always had a love of nature and I think the Marshall Foundation
is doing wonderful work,” he said.
Charlotte Pelton
As President, of The Waters Pelton Organization, Inc. (WPO),
her professional experience has included corporate marketing
and strategic planning responsibilities at two fortune 100
companies, followed by 10+ years as a consultant to non-profits
across the country. Her firm provides team-based planning,
fund raising and marketing communications consulting services
to not-for-profit companies and business/trade associations. Ms.
Pelton earned a BS degree in Business Administration (Marketing)
from the University of Southern Mississippi and completed
postgraduate work at Memphis State University. She
is a member of the Association of Fundraising Professionals
and Executive Women of the Palm Beaches, and serves on the
boards of Pura Vida Missions and the West Palm Beach Library

Audrey Peterman
President and co-founder of Earthwise Productions, Inc., a

and access to our national parks and public lands, and advocates

Julia Pimm
Mrs. Pimm of Key Largo, is a former travel agent who now serves
as assistant to her husband, Stuart Pimm, a noted ecologist
who studies species extinction in the Florida Everglades.
Dr. Tom Poulson
Emeritus Professor in the Ecology and Evolution Section of
the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of
Illinois, Chicago. Dr. Poulson has received grants, awards,
and honors for his teaching and research at all stages of
his career. His award-winning interactive teaching
style always includes questions, discussions, votes, and
participatory demonstrations and games. Since moving
to Florida in 2000 his goal has been to enhance scientific,
ecological, and evolutionary literacy in all venues and to
all ages. To this end he continues to teach for FAU’s
Life-long Learning Society and help with the ARMF’s
K-12 programs and FEI’s Summer Intern Program. As
the Foundation’s Senior Scientist and member of FEI’s
Science and Technology Committee, he brings his expertise,
in biological integrity of aquatic systems to bear on problems
and solutions related to the restoration of our Everglades.

President, JAS Water Resource Consulting, Inc; retired civil
engineer with South Florida Water Management District, serving
for 38 years in various capacities with particular emphasis
on water resources management and Everglades restoration;
recipient of numerous national and state awards; U.S. Naval
Reserve military career, retiring in 1996 with the rank of
Commander, CEC, USNR; serves on board of directors of YMCA
of the Palm Beaches.
Steve Seftenberg, Esq.
Attorney-at-law, West Palm Beach and Chicago; specializes in
estate planning and administration, asset protection and
elder law; recognized for pro-bono work with charitable organizations

Bunnie Stevens
Bunnie is a well-known local philanthropist who can usually
be found leading the charge for a variety of good causes.
She’s been active with the Greater Palm Beach Area
Chapter of the American Red Cross, the English-Speaking Union
and the International Fund for Animal Welfare, to name a
few. Bunnie has been a longtime friend of the Foundation
and has served as an Honorary Ambassador to the River of
Grass Gala several times.
Allen Trefry
Mr. Trefry, of Palm Beach Gardens, recently retired from a
career as Environmental Director for the Resources Protection
Division of the Palm Beach County Department of Environmental
Resources Management. Now, he spends much of his time volunteering
with numerous Palm Beach County organizations, including
Special Olympics, Kravis Center, National Association of
Eagle Scouts, Palm Beach County Environmental Resources Management,
AARP Tax-Aide, Pine Jog Environmental Education Center, Palm
Beach Marathon, SunFest, Grassy Waters Preserve Nature Center,
Water Catchment Area Advisory Board, Pack and Paddle, Gator
Snow Ski Club, Palm Beach Atlantic College, Palm Beach Post

Joel VanArman
An environmental scientist, Joel retired from a 35-year career
with the South Florida Water management District in 2007.
He now runs his own consulting business and has taught at
the university level. He has co-authored numerous articles
that have appeared in peer-reviewed and technical publications,
and he’s received a variety of professional honors,
including membership in Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research
Society.
Dr. Peggy VanArman
Associate Professor of Biology at Palm Beach Atlantic University,
where she has been since 1989. President of Friends of the
Academy, Forest Hill High School Environmental Academy; board
member, Palm Beach County Science and Engineering Fair. Member:
Sigma Xi Research Society, Florida Academy of Scientists,
Florida Association of Environmental Professionals, American
Association of University Women. Dr. VanArman is a published
author who has influenced countless students through the
years through her dedication to science-based solutions for
the Florida Everglades.
Gisa Wagner
A native of the Bavarian Alps, Gisa has over 30 years of experience
in international banking and business management. She’s
worked in Europe, the United States and Asia and, in 1996,
founded GWI, a consulting company specializing in management
issues including strategic planning, business expansion,
reorganizations, and human resources training and development.
Since relocating to West Palm Beach, Gisa has spent some
of her time helping the environmental causes she’s
committed to.
Senator Bob Graham
United States Senator representing Florida, 1987-2005; Florida
Governor 1979-1987, Democratic candidate presidential nomination,
2004. Since leaving public life, Senator Graham has been busy
training the next generation of public leaders at the newly
established Graham Center for Public Service at the University
of Florida. Born in Miami-Dade County in 1959, he attended
Miami Senior High School and earned degrees from the University
of Florida and Harvard Law School.

S. Senator Bob Graham
Served as governor of Florida from 1978 until 1986. As governor,
he pioneered several environmental programs which have attracted
national and international attention, including efforts to save
the Everglades, protect wetlands and safeguard Florida’s
coastline. During this same period of time, Florida brought more
environmentally endangered lands into public ownership than any
other state in the nation.
The “Save Our Everglades” program, launched in 1983,
was designed to restore America’s “River of Grass” and
protect Florida’s wetlands, endangered species and their
habitats. As senator, Graham led the bipartisan coalition that
passed the federal Everglades restoration in 2000. Today, he
is known as the father of the Everglades Restoration effort.
He and his wife Adele, who reside in Miami Shores, have four
daughters and 10 grandchildren. A Florida native, he graduated
from the University of Florida and received his law degree from
Harvard Law School.
U. S. Congressman E. Clay
Shaw, Jr.
Congressman Shaw is a senior member of the Ways and Means Committee
and chairs the Social Security Subcommittee. He also is a member
of the Trade Subcommittee and is committed to expanding free
trade as an engine of economic growth in South Florida and
around the country.
Congressman Shaw is the foremost House champion of Everglades
restoration. He is devoted to seeing this national treasure
protected and preserved for generations to come. The Audubon
Society of Florida recently named him “Legislator of
the Year.” Shaw and his wife Emilie are both natives
of South Florida where they have raised four daughters and
spend their free time with their 14 grandchildren.
Palm Beach County Commissioner John
F. “Jeff” Koons
John Koons has been serving as Palm Beach County Commissioner
since November of 2002. Previously, Mr. Koons served 11 years
on the West Palm Beach City Commission including mayor in
1991 and commission president in 1989 and 1997-1999. He has
a Bachelor of Science degree from Miami University, and since
1970 has worked for Fort Lauderdale/Palm Beach Pepsi Cola
Bottling, his duties ranging from driving a delivery truck
to vice president in charge of community relations. Commissioner
Koons has a long history of volunteer service with organizations
such as the Red Cross, Norton Museum of Art, Armory Art Center,
South Florida Science Museum, and the Center for Creative
Education. . He currently chairs the Dreyfoos School of the
Arts Foundation. He has since chaired the Metropolitan Planning
Organization, the County Transit Advisory Board and Pine
Jog Environmental Education Center, the Keep Florida Beautiful
Board of Directors and the Transportation Disadvantaged Coordination
Board. Commissioner Koons has served on more than two
dozen regulatory and advisory panels including the
Treasure Coast Regional Planning Council, the Florida
League of Cities Environmental Committee, the Community
Health Care Purchasing Alliance, the State Emergency
Response Commission, the Fast Track Freight Mobility Board,
the FDOT 20/20 Study and the Palm Beach County Planning Board.
Mayor Lois J. Frankel
West Palm Beach Mayor Lois Frankel served as a state legislator
for 14 years and was the first democratic woman named House
Minority Leader. During her long political tenure, she earned
a reputation for being an energetic champion of Florida's
children, seniors and working families. Along with her delegation
colleagues she helped to secure millions of dollars of projects
touching every aspect of our city’s life, including
environmental preservation. She advocated for Grassy Waters
Preserve, among other agencies, and was honored by the Florida
League of Conservation Voters.
Lois was born in New York. She graduated Phi Beta Kappa from
Boston University and earned a law degree from Georgetown
University Law Center. She moved to West Palm Beach in 1974
where she began her law practice and family. She is the mother
of son Benjamin, a 1st Lieutenant in the United States Marines.
Honorable Lesly S. Smith
Former Mayor of the Town of Palm Beach and a long time resident
of Palm Beach, she served three terms as Mayor. She served
on the town council for seven years, five of which she was
president and chairman of the Finance and Tax Committee.
She is president of the Fortin Child Care Foundation, which
operates day care centers for babies with AIDS. She also
is a trustee of the Preservation Foundation of Palm Beach;
a former member of the Board of Governors for Good Samaritan/St.
Mary’s Hospitals; director of Grassy Waters Nature
Preserve; member of the Lake Worth Lagoon Ecosystem Management
steering committee; member of the Palm Beach County Water
Catchment Area advisory committee; director of the Pitt Foundation;
vice president of the Fortin Foundation of Florida; former
trustee of the Society of Four Arts; and director of Island
National Bank, now merged with Wachovia Bank. Mayor Smith
is the recipient of the Garden Club of America’s “Medal
of Merit” and “Zone Civic Improvement Award;” the
Garden Club of Palm Beach “Historic Preservation Achievement” award,
and the Palm Beach Chamber of Commerce’s “One
and Only” award.
Dr. Stuart L. Pimm
Doris Duke Professor of Conservation Ecology, Environmental
Sciences and Policy Division, Duke University’s Nicholas
School of the Environment. Member, American Academy of Arts
and Sciences. Author of over 150 scientific papers including
three review articles in Nature and Science and four books
including The Balance of Nature? Ecological issues in the
conservation of species and communities and his new global
assessment of biodiversity's future: The World According
to Pimm: a scientist audits the Earth.His commitment to the
interface between science and policy has lead to his testimony
to both House and Senate Committees on the re-authorization
of the Endangered Species Act. Current work includes studies
of endangered species and ecosystem restoration in the Florida
Everglades, and setting priorities for protected areas in
the Atlantic Coast forest of Brazil. Awards include a Pew
Scholarship for Conservation and the Environment (in 1993)
and an Aldo Leopold Leadership Fellowship (in 1999). The
Institute of Scientific Information recognized him in 2002
as being one of the world's most highly cited scientists.

PBC Commissioner Addie Greene
Commissioner Addie Greene obtained a Bachelor of Science
degree from Stillman College in Tuscaloosa, Alabama and a
Master of Education degree from Florida A&M University.
She is a native of Alabama, but has been a resident of Palm
Beach County since 1965. She presently lives in Mangonia
Park where she previously served as Vice Mayor in 1988 and
Mayor in 1991. In 1992, she was elected to the Florida House
of Representatives and served four consecutive terms as the
District 84 representative. During her state tenure, she
served on many House committees that brought much needed
state dollars home to Palm Beach County. Since joining the
Board of County Commissioners, Commissioner Greene has helped
secure funding for projects beneficial to our community such
as an aquatics facility in Riviera Beach, the Dan Calloway
Recreation Complex, the Northwest Community Center, the Spady
House Museum and C. Spencer Pompey Amphitheater in Delray
Beach, the Wilson Recreation Center and Pool Renovation,
the 1916 County Courthouse Restoration and the 4-H Community
Gardens. She arranged recreational and cultural funding in
support of Heritage Fest, Children's Outreach, the Mt. Olive
Community Outreach Center, the Roots Festival, the Soul of
Delray, the Annual Jazz & Blues Festival in Riviera Beach,
the Salvation Army, the Teen Partnership Coalition, and Operation
Hope, not to mention several school-based programs. She has
also applied funds from the district improvement program
to various projects giving many streets and neighborhoods
in her district a "make-over."
