Sea Level Rise Symposium 2013

This summer, the Marshall Foundation and its 2013 Summer Interns are hosting our first symposium, in collaboration with Oxbridge Academy and the League of Women Voters, to bring more awareness to sea level rise and adaptations, such as Everglades Restoration, that can help mitigate the effects. These important topics will be addressed via expert presentations, panels, breakout sessions and workshops with over 45 speakers. John Englander, author of High Tide on Main Street, will set the stage for the sea level rise over the next 50 years, followed by panel discussions with other prominent leaders on this issue, such as Dr. Hal Wanless, UM Geological Sciences Department Chair and expert on sea level rise known for his environmental solutions, and Stan Bronson, Executive Director of the FL Earth Foundation and founder of the US-Netherlands Connection. James Murley, Exec. Director of the South Florida Regional Planning Council, member of the South Florida Water Management District Water Resource's Advisory Committee and sponsor of the Seven50 Plan for Economic Prosperity in SE Florida.

Our summer interns will also be noteworthy speakers, as they will be presenting the results of their final project during one of the breakout sessions. This year, their research project will build on the ecosystem service valuation data of the past classes, while also considering Everglades restoration as a mitigation factor to the effects of sea level rise.

The Public, community leaders, policy makers, government officials and employees, scientists and teachers are all invited to learn several sides of the same story in an effort to find answers that are in the best interest of the community, county, state and all its citizens. Compelling discussion is expected to ensue following this highly informative program.

The younger generation is encouraged to attend the symposium and become active participants in the discussions of the environmental issues facing us today and tomorrow. Their fresh views and innovative solutions will add an exciting dimension to the diverse ideas expressed by our auspicious symposium guests.
